Eastern Curlews breed in Russia and Eastern China and migrate to Australia where they are found around the Australian coast line including Tasmania during our summer. Birds in Backyards has a fact sheet at

The species is found mainly in north east Australia and south mainly but also elsewhere scattered around coastal habitats.The Eastern Curlews were coming in to roost during the day at the sand spit in dribs and drabs at high tide and this one came in solo.
