If these shots were taken in Kek Lok Tong, then I believe I have come across that son of a bi*** poacher who did that to the WT. If I see him catching bird next time, I will not hesitate to stop him, even if it means having to fight him. A**ho##!

JKC, your Whistling Thrush is a Blue Whistling Thrush, the Malayan Whistling thrush is so far a highland specialty, so far, only one spot, Fraser's Hill remained to have sightings until recently.
You had the juvenile, was so furious someone attempted to catch it? The species is quite uncommon throughout the country but locally fairly common in these parts of Ipoh, best found in Kek Look Tong area.

welcome.... these are the 3 stars of Kek Look Tong, probably the easiest place to find the 3 species...... my neighbourhood has the Java sparrows as well, but smaller numbers, and just recently, I also discovered the Blue Rock Thrush, so next, I need to look for this Blue Whistling Thrush....

Re: Birds from outside the Cave
funny thing is why this bird doesn't have the spotted dots on the body?

If for male bird, breeding is full blue, non-breeding is spotted.

I just have a look in the Craig Robson book. the bird I got sure looks like a juvy and more like a female juvy which has less blue and dots. but nevertheless still a lifer to me.

what do you mean by that? are you referring to Blue Rock or Whistling Thrush? The one that is spotted is female Rock Thrush, like the one you got, a female..... they are placed in same page in robson's, 2000 version, so maybe you are looking at the wrong species?

hahaha..... dont simply google la.... you found a different subspecies.... that one should occur throughout southern China, the black bill one in Northern South east asia, very spotty, under the right light, our subspecies is one of the dimmest in color, so the blue speckles are not apparently obvious, probably only seeable under very strong sun light coming in in the right angle and you viewing at a right slanting angle? Actually the blue speckles is what gave the bird the name Blue, definitely not named after our subspecies, we have 2 subspecies in Malaysia, one of them restricted to the northwest.....

Re: Birds from outside the Cave
this bird really like to be under dim area, the location were pretty low light. when using exposure compensate above 2/3 I found is hard to bring out the color and if above 1.1/3 the color might not be natural. anyway thx for the info ya

and your bird is a juvenile, generally still very brownish in color, and can easily confuse one with the Bornean Whistling Thrush but both of them dont co-occur...... the adults will be darker blue-back, our subspecies dont show much of the bright blue speckles, but do have blue speckled sheens under good light, but the species generally avoids good light......

These poachers are really getting out of hand... We have 2 cars identified as poachers here in Phanti.
Hate them~!
Nice shots... love the Java Sparrow~!
