Mountain Hawk-eagle? Empty Mountain Hawk-eagle?

Post by chongbt Sun Mar 03, 2013 11:17 pm

Shot these at Bukit Tinggi, Bentung, Pahang this morning.
Lone bird perch on a large and tall trunk.
Unfortunately its back-lit but good enough to see clearly.
Can anyone double confirm its ID? I think its a Mountain Hawk-eagle.

Look like Blyth's Hawk-eagle, a handsome fellow .
I like it's "V" shape hair style.

Of all the three punky raptor, I can only judge by their different tail bars. I hope the Sifus here can enlighten me that in simple terms. So my view here is Blyth's.

Its black, its Blyth's Hawk Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle is brown and more likely confused with Wallace's and best thing is, in Malaysia, they are known ONLY ON LANGKAWI!!

This is a Blyth Hawk Eagle. You can tell from the colour and the way the streak is arrange. All three wallace, blyth and mountain can be told from there too Smile

According to my guide book, we have Wallace all over Borneo though I haven't seen one yet.

Can tail band be used as primary identification or they are not reliable at all. I hope not to depend on color for ID too much as exposure and White Balance can result in wrong ID, until such time I can properly process picture according to the correct exposure and white balance.

Yes you can. They do show differences on tail pattern. However care should be taken for some age class i.e juvy Blyth and juvy wallaces extreamly similar. Same goes to some age class for mountain compare to the blyth's and wallaces.
