Beware of this monkey when you are at Bukit Tinggi.
Anyone
see this monkey at Bukit Tinggi, please be careful, it looks very
friendly and like to play with you and ask for food, yesterday morning
we really had fun with him and took lot of photos, after a litter while
when we started busy to shoot the Silver Breasted Broadbill, we heard
some loud scream from the souvenir shop, a small little Malay girl
around 3 years old was attacked from this monkey, her whole shirt was
full of blood, her arm was being bite by this monkey and been told that
her arm bone was broke, PLESAE BEWARE OF THIS MONKEY when you see him at
Bukit Tinggi.

Adrian told me the gibbon jaw were chopped off front eh head?
Re: Beware of this monkey when you are at Bukit Tinggi.
Now, something is very wrong with this picture.
This guy is a juvenile, where are its parents?
It does not look to be age where it can be by itself.
Even at this age, look at those canines.
Damn long and sharp man.
More the reason to leave wildlife alone and do take or think of them as pets.
What about the little girl, any updates?
The reports on the monkey's status is really unclear now.

I think the parent might has misunderstood that these Gibbon are wile not rare by the park.
it remind me a warning sign board at zoo which shown a human think the bear is like a cute teddy bear, the other way round the bear think of us like food is around.
luckily is not the panther I heard.
anyway! Adrian told me the girl was sent to Bentong hospital but the injury too serious the hospital has to divert the girl to another hospital (don't know which one) tried to search for news but failed.

Re: Beware of this monkey when you are at Bukit Tinggi.
btw! don't feed the monkey. once you feed them they will come back for more and eventually if they coudn't find food they will become aggressive and terrorizes the place.
It happens once in club-Med. the monkey when in to my college room and rank sack the whole room to find food. because they feed the monkey day before.

Thanks for the update.
Anyway, I think is coming to be difficult for us birders to go there now.
It look like a lawsuit coming against the park.

Ya! I noticed that also on Saturday morning, and we thought the cleaning was done by the gardeners.

Re: Beware of this monkey when you are at Bukit Tinggi.
a very sad day.
but most people don't want to listen. in Tmn TAR for instance, bunch of people feeding the monkeys, the gibbons and wildboars every late afternoon albeit some notice "do not feed the monkeys" was set by the Perhilitan and nearby resident community...

if they did not feed the macaques, and only feed the gibbons and wildboars, then they are in fact following the notice!!! because wildboars are not monkeys...... and neither is gibbons, gibbons are actually apes, but they are further away from Homonid apes like Orangutan, Gorilla and Chimpanzee to humans. I think the appropriate sign should be "Do not feed the wild animals".
Malaysian usually have poor reading skills, if you put up "Do not throw rubbish", tomorrow, you will find this spot under this sign board a rubbish dump....... Malaysia Boleh!!

It was a sad day, having to witness the suffering of the monkey, and to hear about the suffering of the little girl as well. It was not a conflict between human and animal, it was the result of just pure ignorance.
Let me just be a little more specific. There are 4 species of monkeys up in Berjaya Hills, this specie is not one of them. So my conclusion is, it was reared by someone, and discarded there for one reason or another, since it was so used to people, and so cuddly. Reason why the attack was probably because of jealousy, since the little girl was small and more like one of its kind, in terms of size.
Having bitten the little girl, the construction worker went after the poor monkey with a 'parang', leaving it with a big cut on its left jaw, and I believed the jaw was also broken. Somehow, they still could not catch the animal, until the ranger came and pumped 3 bullets into its body.
This is the monkey. I could do nothing but watched. I did tell the guys that if they had to kill it, just made it quick and swift, but they could not even get near it.
Poor monkey was in fear and in pain !!!

thanks for the update adrian.
Is a real sad ending. but if the ranger didn't kill the gibbon. for sure he/she won't able to survive or it will even surfer longer. sigh!

oh my... this is a true evidence that no one should feed whatever you want to call it whether beruk, monyet, apes, gibbon, orang utan or Charles Darwin...
it was a disaster...

Sigh...
Leave the wild animals in the wild.
They are not pet materials.
So did they charge the construction worker with injuring the wild and protected animal.
He was not in the position to injure or take its life.

Re: Beware of this monkey when you are at Bukit Tinggi.
my conclusion was a competition due to food. I think the father has given some food to the gibbon earlier, than when the little girl got some food from her father it became a conflict within human and animal. the gibbon tried to protect his/her food territories.
These are normal in the wild. that's trigger the gibbon to bite because it tried to protect he/her food/feeding territories.
just my point of view.

Thank you for your information, Adrian.
I think BT management should put up * Do not feed wild animal*sign board with photo around that area to remind tourist.
And just can not imagine why ranger needed to take 3 shots to this pity, I thought the ranger should aim at head part with just one killing shot.
Birders, pls don learn from this ranger, just aim at eyes part and just one shot for bird. LOL!
Anyway, during my last visit to BT, I noticed a lot of tourist shouting around and I am afraid in the coming years, birds will become less
here.

Re: Beware of this monkey when you are at Bukit Tinggi.
Ben, there is never a threat from the monkeys in Bukit Tinggi, and there is no threat from human too. The monkeys will never pick up what you throw on the ground, they normally stay up in the tree and eat the fruits and leaves, not like the common monkeys that we see in town and area such as Batu Caves.
3 bullets, I guess because the monkey was stuck within branches. That's the way the rangers do things, CRUDE, cruel and thoughtless !

Ben. After the trees been cut down I think it needs months for the wildlife there to come near. For short lens shooter like me. It will be difficult.
