Re: Is this a Shikra or what?
you need to let us know where you get this guy....... Shikra is still seriously under recorded in Peninsular Malaysia but recently found to be abundant over Chumphon at least. If you see at your regular Thailand area where this species is commoner, I can see points that you think is Shikra, including pale grey head, dark maroonish bars horizontally, most well-built body, less barrings on outmost tail feathers, 1 mesial stripe, what puzzles me is the streaks beside the mesial stripe, or else I am happy to accept this as a female Shikra (yellow eyes), the streaks could probably is related to age, the only species in this region that had a streaky throat (but no mesial stripe) shall be the very rare Eurasian Sparrowhawk, but many other features failed on that brownish species.

Thks sifu Tou and Mr. NG, this one is from NE thailand, found perched next to a dirty muddy pond in lowland dipterocarp habitat.
So for now it's shikra la...I was hoping for something else.

it is likely common in Peninsular Malaysia, at least as a passage migrant, last year, there were 2000+ counted over Chumphon, this year 3000+ with peak count of 500+ a day, it is actually very numerous, but people here had difficulty identifying accipiters especially at lowlands, we often need to dismiss many accipiters as Accipiter spp., so perhaps everyone need to try snap shots, squint eyes or whatever to help us locate these missing Shikras!!
