its a Bornean endemic subspecies, splitting or not is not entirely based on exterior appearance.....
Richard's/Paddyfield is almost identical yet the split is supported....
orientalis and torquatus Oriental Honey Buzzards looked quite different but analysis support that they should NOT be split
the Sabahan mortelyi Rufous-backed Kingfisher looked almost exactly like a Black-backed Kingfisher but molecular studies prove that it is in fact part of the Rufous-backed Kingfisher group!
Differences in tone of coloration dont help much in taxonomy, the more useful one is gonna be stronger anatomical differences, such as the different body part ratios and etc are stronger than plumage often.

Erm..... I accepted the split at least, and ya, it is also officially accepted by MNS-BCC in the latest list. It is found to NOT be a HYBRID as believed after some molecular analysis, which also explained why there are so many degree of HYBRIDS, which was a mistake due to the variable nature of the black on the wing of Rufous-backed Kingfishers!
The Black-backed is so far a strict migrant with NO evidence of breeding in the Peninsular and NO confirmed specimens from Borneo at all after this mystery is solved, so its worth looking for the real Black-backed in Borneo now.

This Bornean endemic species is more beautiful than the one here. Seen them in Sepilok also.
How is birding in Sarawak? Would love to visit Sarawak for birding one day.

I went to Borneo height and Kubah National Park only, a 2N3D trip. Overall not so much bird seen, but if u r looking for rare and the endemic bird like the brown barbet, the pygmy white eye, banded kingfisher, bornean blue flycatcher, the bornean bristlehead, the reddish scops owl, creasted jay, blue banded pitta and sunda scops-owl most likely u can get them. But u must engaged the local guide to locate the birds, he is very good.
