Digiscoping with a DSLR
Hi ppl,
For the past 6 months I've been using the Canon 70-300mm IS USM on my 600D, while living with the colour fringing and lack of pull for distant birds. My budget only allowed me to go up to the Sigma 150-500mm OS HSM, but just recently someone told me to try digiscoping. So I searched & researched for something I could try out affordably, and ended up with a Celestron C70 Mini-Mak (750mm foc. len., f/11). The seller recommended the Regal 65 F-ED instead but that was 4X the price and I wasn't sure I'd like digiscoping to pay so much. So the C70 arrived with its T-adapter, T-ring, 2X Barlow, table-top tripod.
As a scope, the C70 was just fine. After setting it up for prime focus using the Barlow T-adapter without the 2X lens and without the zoom eyepiece, I got the biggest shock to see the image was upside down! So composing the image was very difficult especially when the subject started moving, even a bit. The supplier told me that prime focus was like that with DSLRs and this does not happen with afocal photography using a compact with the eyepiece in place.
Does anyone here have the same experience, and is digiscoping even worth the trouble with a DSLR?
Thx

Re: Digiscoping with a DSLR
I does not have experience with Digiscoping but can for sure...
By using DSLR and prime lens like me is Canon 7D + 600mmF4 IS, if compare will be..
Focus faster.... sharper... better color...
The digiscoping for me is lighter, cheaper and can view very far..

Please stick to DSLR and Lens if you need high quality picture.... best you can join other bird photographer so you can know better for DSLR...
Re: Digiscoping with a DSLR
Hi Nelson, if I could afford L lenses, I'd go for them, but sad to say, cannot lah. That's why I'm looking at alternatives. Bird photographers I know some, and most of them can afford it, so that's a big difference there.
But thanks for the advice anyway.

Don't forget the Canon 400mm F5.6L, this is very fast and good.... before I using this for year after only upgrade... many member here is using like JKC, Demand.. but some of them upgrade...to 600mm, price about the same as Sigma 150-500mm if between this two lens... highly recommend Canon 400mm F5.6 L
Re: Digiscoping with a DSLR
Hmmm OK, another lens to consider. Actually I have good things about the 400m f5.6L, but the range will be more limited than the Sigma's, unless I use a teleconverter

Re: Digiscoping with a DSLR
haha... digiscoping, with high quality optics from hi-end scope would yield better result but it was limited to static birds due to manual focus. but, some hi-end scope is as expensive as pro grade super telephoto lenses

100mm less only, if compare with speed, sharp, color, low light and quality you have to choose 400mm F5.6l, 600D have 18p... it good enough for cropping when necessary. 400mm with Telecoverter with 600D you can't auto focus unless you using 1D mark series of Camera only able to auto focus.. but to force it auto focus with 600D you have to tape the telecoverter pin... but you need good light, else the focus will be hunt.
Please remember, if with telecoverter the photo quality will be drop a bit
Re: Digiscoping with a DSLR
So 400mm + telecon IQ will it still be better than the Sigma. you think?
